Though I have not ever been in a serious automobile collision, I have been in one that could have been serious had things been just a little different. I consider myself lucky, and I hope this is nothing that I ever have to go through, and I hope no-one in my family has that sort of bad luck either. No-one wants to go through an automobile accident; you have to know it is a possibility. I worry about them the most in winter. We live in an area where everyone thinks they can handle the snow, and they go speeding through it as if they were indomitable. They are frequently proven wrong.

It seemed there was a rash of accidents when I was a teenager. I can't say I was much better. Though I didn't drive, I did ride along with people who had done so. I was not what you would call a dense person either. Teenagers know the dangers of an auto crash but they just don't think it can happen to them. I just not ever thought I was in danger, and I was fortunate that the only automobile accident I was in was very minor, and equally lucky in that nobody got hurt. Icy streets were to blame for that accident, and thankfully no-one had been drinking.

You have to warn them of the dangers of drinking and being in a vehicle, and you have to let them know that an automobile collision can happen at any time. This might not be enough though, and that means you have to make sure you know where your children are and what they are doing at all times. This might mean making them stay home when their friends are out. They might say they dislike you for it, but it's all part of being a great parent. Personally, I would prefer a mad kid to a dead child.
